Give him the truth and he may still go wrong when he has the chance to be right, but give him no news or present him only with distorted and incomplete data, with ignorant, sloppy or biased reporting, with propaganda and deliberate falsehoods, and you destroy his whole reasoning process, and make him something less than a man." | | -- Arthur Hays Sulzberger |
| "Did you really think that we want those laws to be observed?" said Dr. Ferris. "We *want* them broken....There's no way to rule innocent men. The only power any government has is the power to crack down on criminals. Well, when there aren't enough criminals, one makes them. One declares so many things to be a crime that it becomes impossible for men to live without breaking laws. Who wants a nation of law-abiding citizens? What's there in that for anyone? But just pass the kind of laws that can neither be observed nor enforced nor objectively interpreted and you create a nation of law-breakers and then you cash in on guilt. Now that's the system, Mr. Rearden, that's the game, and once you understand it, you'll be much easier to deal with." | | -- Ayn Rand, Atlas Shrugged , Ch. III, "White Blackmail" |
Responsible Animal Owners supports reasonable and necessary laws designed to protect the public’s welfare as long as those laws do not violate the rights of responsible animal owners, are well written, and provide a bonafide solution to a real problem. Responsible Animal Owners rejects the notion that responsible animal owners’ rights have to be violated in order to protect the public’s welfare. Responsible animal owners do not allow animals to present real threats or cause real problems within their communities and obey the laws. We are opposed to any legislation proposed as a "knee-jerk" reaction to an emotionally laden incident or problem. A new or amended law may, in fact, be necessary. If a new or amended law is necessary, elected representatives are encouraged to exercise extreme caution and proceed with restraint when drafting, proposing, and deliberating legislation to insure that logic and not emotion "rule the day." Animal related legislation is complicated and has many facets, including but not limited to the needs of the community as a whole and the emotional attachment of owners to their pets. It is critical that the needs of the community be considered, that the rights of owners be respected, that the welfare of animals be protected, and that the problem and solution be genuine. RAOT'S POSITION on each piece of legislation or resolution is indicated by one of the following graphics appearing before the bill number(s): |
